WiBAF : Within Browser Adaptation Framework

    Get PDF
The objective of this thesis project is to develop a framework that provides mechanisms to the user to balance personalization and privacy on the web. To achieve this we suggest a browser based adaptation engine that allows the user to choose what portions of her user model will be stored on the client and what will be on the server, trading privacy for personalization. Given that the server can store some data, data-driven adaptation can be enabled, therefore a way to bring together data-driven and expert-driven adaptation has to be defined. Finally it would be interesting to perform meta-adaptation to enhance this data-driven personaliization. Keywords: Adaptation, client-side modeling, data-driven adaptation, expert-driven adaptation, meta-adaptation, server-side modeling, user modeling

Library of medium-resolution fiber optic echelle spectra of F, G, K, and M field dwarfs to giants stars

    Get PDF
We present a library of Penn State Fiber Optic Echelle (FOE) observations of a sample of field stars with spectral types F to M and luminosity classes V to I. The spectral coverage is from 3800 AA to 10000 AA with nominal a resolving power 12000. These spectra include many of the spectral lines most widely used as optical and near-infrared indicators of chromospheric activity such as the Balmer lines (H_alpha, H_beta), Ca II H & K, Mg I b triplet, Na I D_{1} and D_{2}, He I D_{3}, and Ca II IRT lines. There are also a large number of photospheric lines, which can also be affected by chromospheric activity, and temperature sensitive photospheric features such as TiO bands. The spectra have been compiled with the goal of providing a set of standards observed at medium resolution. We have extensively used such data for the study of active chromosphere stars by applying a spectral subtraction technique. However, the data set presented here can also be utilized in a wide variety of ways ranging from radial velocity templates to study of variable stars and stellar population synthesis. This library can also be used for spectral classification purposes and determination of atmospheric parameters (T_eff, log{g}, [Fe/H]). A digital version of all the fully reduced spectra is available via ftp and the World Wide Web (WWW) in FITS format.Comment: Latex file with 17 pages, 4 figures. In this demo we discuss a few possible scenarios showing adaptation of presentation and information to assist autistic students in succeeding in higher education. These students not only have specific information need, they are also more concerned about their privacy. We use WiBAF (Within Browser Adaptation Framework) for user modeling and adaptation to give users control over the sharing of their data

BBIPED: BCAM-Baltogar Industrial Platform for Engineering Design

    Get PDF
Currently, commercial software for computational fluid dynamics offers a good set of features to deal with traditional designs. Within a competitive market industrial innovation is a key factor that must be faced by companies. However, the design of solutions to deal with industrial challenges cannot be done within commercial software due to the lack of flexibility. Open source initiatives are a good option but the learning curve is high, specially for industrial engineers profiles. In this paper, we present the BBIPED platform which has been designed to deal with turbomachinery applications in a simple and friendly way. The main goal is to keep the platform as simpler as possible providing the enough flexibility to include out-of-the-box solutions to cope with industrial challenges. BBIPED platform provides links with currently existing remarkable open source initiatives altogether with our own developments. Particularly, it is remarkable a first approach for automatic mesh generation based on geometry parametrization solution, and the provision of novel techniques to deal with multiple rotating frame (MRF): Multizone MRF an Virtual MRF. Case tests were designed to test the solutions and to assess and validate the results against commercial suites with promising results

Characterization and immunolocalization of a main proteinaceous component of the cell wall of the protozoan parasite Perkinsus atlanticus

Described in the present study is a major component of the cell wall of two of the most pathogenic parasites of molluscs, Perkinsus atlanticus and P. marinus. The component is a high-molecular-weight protein (233-kDa), which we have named PWP-1 (for Perkinsus wall protein-1). Western blots, using a polyclonal serum generated against purified PWP-1 from P. atlanticus, revealed that this protein is expressed by all walled developmental stages of this protozoon. By means of immunogold electron microscopy, labelling for PWP-1 was strong and specifically associated with the cell wall. The label density and distribution pattern was quite different between trophozoites and prezoosporangia. With regard to the structural organization of this protein, PWP-1 is disulphide-linked to other cell wall components and released from the cell wall only following treatment with a sulfhydryl agent. We also report that PWP-1 is a trypsin-resistant protein, both in its native and heat-denatured conformation. In addition, results from the N-terminal microsequence of this protein allow us to define PWP-1 as a novel cell wall protein. Overall, our findings strongly suggest that PWP-1 plays a key role in the organization of the cell wall of these protozoa promoting their survival

On the binary nature of 1RXS J162848.1-415241

We present spectroscopy of the optical counterpart to 1RXS J162848.1-41524, also known as the microquasar candidate MCQC J162847-4152. All the data indicate that this X-ray source is not a microquasar, and that it is a single-lined chromospherically active binary system with a likely orbital period of 4.9 days. Our analysis supports a K3IV spectral classification for the star, which is dominant at optical wavelengths. The unseen binary component is most likely a late-type (K7-M) dwarf or a white dwarf. Using the high resolution spectra we have measured the K3 star's rotational broadening to be vsini = 43 +/- 3 km/s and determined a lower limit to the binary mass ratio of q(=M2/M1)>2.0. The high rotational broadening together with the strong CaII H & K / Halpha emission and high-amplitude photometric variations indicate that the evolved star is very chromospherically active and responsible for the X-ray/radio emission.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

Influence of particle size on extrapleural talc dissemination after talc slurry pleurodesis

Cases of acute respiratory failure reported after talc pleurodesis have raised concerns about its safety. It has been speculated that this pulmonary inflammatory syndrome is secondary to the extrapleural dissemination of the talc particles. Study objectives: To test the hypothesis that particle size influences extrapleural talc deposition and pleural inflammation after talc slurry pleurodesis. Design: Thirty rabbits underwent pleurodesis as follows: 10 rabbits received 200 mg/kg of the talc used for human pleurodesis, normal talc (NT); 10 rabbits received 200 mg/kg of talc with particles of larger size, large talc (LT); and 10 rabbits received saline solution. Samples from the ipsilateral lung, chest wall, diaphragm, mediastinal pleura, heart, liver, spleen, and right kidney were obtained at 24 h and 7 days and processed for optic and electron microscopy and energydispersive x-ray analysis. Results: Visceral pleural thickening was greater with NT than with LT, but no differences were observed in the macroscopic score of adhesions. There was more talc in the lungs of the rabbits that received NT than in those that received LT. Talc particles were detected in mediastinum (100%) and pericardium (20%), irrespective of the talc used. Three animals, all receiving NT, had talc particles in the liver. Conclusions: Our study shows that while both talcs were equally effective in achieving pleurodesis, the intrapleural injection of NT elicits greater pulmonary and systemic talc particle deposition than LT. Moreover, pleural inflammation was greater with NT than with LT

Predicting aging-related decline in physical performance with sparse electrophysiological source imaging

Objective: We introduce a methodology for selecting biomarkers from activation and connectivity derived from Electrophysiological Source Imaging (ESI). Specifically, we pursue the selection of stable biomarkers associated with cognitive decline based on source activation and connectivity patterns of resting-state EEG theta rhythm, used as predictors of physical performance decline in aging individuals measured by a Gait Speed (GS) slowing. Methods: Our two-step methodology involves estimating ESI using flexible sparse-smooth-nonnegative models, from which activation ESI (aESI) and connectivity ESI (cESI) features are derived. The Stable Sparse Classifier method then selects potential biomarkers related to GS changes. Results and Conclusions: Our predictive models using aESI outperform traditional methods such as the LORETA family. The models combining aESI and cESI features provide the best prediction of GS changes. Potential biomarkers from activation/connectivity patterns involve orbitofrontal and temporal cortical regions. Significance: The proposed methodology contributes to the understanding of activation and connectivity of GS-related ESI and provides features that are potential biomarkers of GS slowing. Given the known relationship between GS decline and cognitive impairment, this preliminary work opens novel paths to predict the progression of healthy and pathological aging and might allow an ESI-based evaluation of rehabilitation programs
